Mantenance of Certification

NEW TIME LIMIT FOR CERTIFICATES

Beginning in 2001, all new certificates and maintenance of certification certificates issued by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology are SIX years in duration.

The information in this section of the ABOG Web site is taken from the BULLETIN FOR 2007, MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION, which was issued in September 2006. The Bulletin is the official statement of the requirements in effect for the 2007 maintenance of certification examinations.

METHODS FOR MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION

1. Voluntary Recertification

Voluntary recertification applies only to those Diplomates whose certification occurred prior to 1986 (in general ob/gyn) or 1987 (in the subspecialties).

These individuals have NO time limitation on their certificates.

2. Certificate Renewal

Certificate renewal applies to Diplomates with time-limited certificates (certificates issued in or after 1986 for general ob/gyn and in or after 1987 for subspecialists). The time granted for each method is listed below.

Both Voluntary Recertification and Certificate Renewal can be obtained by one of three methods:

Written Examination 6 years duration
Oral Examination 6 years duration
Annual Board Certification Annual certification plus at least 25 CME credits

A WORD OF CAUTION

All correspondence with the Board should be sent by a service that has tracking capability, (e.g., FedEx, UPS). This will allow you to verify the receipt of correspondence, applications and fees sent to ABOG.

Deadlines set by ABOG are based upon RECEIPT of the information in the Board office, not the date of shipping.
