About the ABOG

red leavesWHAT IS THE BOARD?

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology is an independent, non-profit organization that certifies obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States.

Founded in 1927, the ABOG is one of 24 specialty Boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.


CERTIFICATION AND MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION

The ABOG examines and certifies nearly 1,700 obstetrician-gynecologists and subspecialists in maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology/ infertility and gynecologic oncology each year.

Additionally, approximately 5,000 physicians are examined annually for the purpose of maintenance of certification.


APPROVAL OF FELLOWSHIPS

In addition, the Board approves fellowship programs in the subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology.

This Board is a founding member of, and holds active membership in, the American Board of Medical Specialties.

This Board also functions in cooperation with the Residency Review Committee for Obstetrics-Gynecology, and the Council on Resident Education for Obstetrics-Gynecology.
