ABOG Statement Regarding Our Ever-Changing Environment

February 27, 2025

ABOG recognizes that this is a time of unprecedented uncertainties for our diplomates, candidates, and residents and fellows in training. As a board-certifying body, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) is reassured by the fact that providing excellent care while managing uncertainty, balancing probabilities, and always remaining focused on the patient is the hallmark of an obstetrician-gynecologist’s work. This admirable ability to function amongst disruptions and complexities stems from rigorous training, commitment to continuous learning, and the pursuit of mastery.  ABOG has the highest confidence in our candidates’ and diplomates’ abilities to apply their expertise to navigate the uncertainty and turmoil of today and events that may lie ahead.

ABOG’s mission – to define the standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and promote continuous learning to enhance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health – serves as our guiding tenet as we ensure our diplomates can optimally serve the patients who need their care.  To that end, ABOG maintains a steadfast focus on our certification standards, which are based on scientific evidence, grounded in psychometrically sound processes, and reflect current national practices.

ABOG recognizes with gratitude the invaluable support that is available through professional specialty and subspecialty societies and other trusted resources. This includes the latest evidence-based clinical content as well as information regarding relevant legal and state medical board rulings. ABOG encourages diplomates, candidates, and residents/fellows in training to seek out these resources to ensure that care is optimized and current for today’s dynamic environment.

Principles in ABOG’s professionalism policy, such as patient autonomy, beneficence, empathy, integrity, respect, accountability, and acting in patients’ best interests should continue to guide practice. These principles align with our collective goals of serving patients’ needs and upholding public trust. ABOG stands resolute in its belief that the dedication and resilience of our specialty community will ensure the continued delivery of exceptional obstetrics and gynecological care across the nation. Together, we will persist in maintaining the highest practice standards, adapting to the numerous challenges we face today and in the future.
