ACOG FAQs

The American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG) is the premier professional membership organization for obstetrician–gynecologists. The College produces practice guidelines for health care professionals and educational materials for patients, provides practice management and career support, facilitates programs and initiatives to improve women’s health, and advocates for members and patients. 


The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) is a non-profit organization that board certifies obstetricians and gynecologists (Ob-Gyns) and offers continuing certification to Ob-Gyns in the United States and Canada. Board certification is a voluntary process for those physicians who choose to pursue certification. ABOG works with affiliate organizations (ACOG) in order to achieve its mission and offer the best certification programs possible for Candidates and Diplomates (www.abog.org/about-abog/related-organizations-and-resources).  


In summary, ABOG administers the certification exam and manages Continuing Certification (CC). ACOG is an accredited organization that can issue CME credits. 

Your ACOG membership dues are not up to date, because it has expired or was terminated. Once the dues payment is made, it should be reflected in the ABOG portal. 

Yes, the fee can be refunded if: 

  • It has been less than a year since they paid the $390 non-member fee 
  • The member has paid their membership dues entirely. No balance.  

An ACOG Fellow is a board-certified obstetrician–gynecologist whose professional activity is devoted to the practice of obstetrics, gynecology, or both. 

ACOG Fellow membership is granted only after a complete online Fellow application has been received, processed, and approved. Please visit acog.org/joinacog to see the requirements and button to the online application.  

To be a Fellow, an Ob-Gyn must have: 

  • Certification and Continuing Certification in obstetrics, gynecology, or both from one of the boards recognized by the College Board of Directors 
  • An active, unrestricted license to practice medicine and surgery in each jurisdiction where they are licensed or country of residence where they are licensed 
  • Attainment of high ethical and professional standing 

Applicants are required to pay an application fee of $300, which is a one-time fee separate from membership dues. This fee must be submitted with the application and is not refundable. 

ACOG Fellow membership dues are billed once the applicant is admitted as an ACOG Fellow. Please note the ACOG Fellow application fee is NOT part of dues. Recently paid ACOG Junior Fellow dues will be prorated, and the applicable credit, if any, will be deducted from the ACOG Fellow membership dues. Payment of ACOG Fellow membership dues invoice must be received within 90 days of admittance. 

It can take up to 4 weeks to process a complete ACOG Fellow application.  

Yes, ACOG Junior Fellows that have recently become board-certified must apply for ACOG Fellow membership. There is no automatic transfer, submission of a complete Fellow application is required.  

Yes, a recently admitted ACOG Fellow will owe dues, which are higher than ACOG Junior Fellow dues. Recently paid ACOG Junior Fellow dues will be prorated, and the applicable credit, if any, will be deducted from the ACOG Fellow membership dues. Payment of ACOG Fellow membership dues invoice must be received within 90 days of admittance. 

ACOG Fellow membership will remain active as long as the following requirements are met. 

  • Maintain an active, unrestricted medical license 
  • Keep membership dues up to date 
  • Certification and Continuing Certification in obstetrics, gynecology, or both from one of the boards recognized by the College Board of Directors.
