ABOG Concludes a Successful 2023 Certifying Exam Cycle

December 18, 2023

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) has successfully completed its 2023 Certifying Exam (CE) cycle of in-person oral examinations.

The 2023 Specialty CE cycle marked a successful return to in-person exams in Dallas since 2019, with both examiners and candidates present at the temporary ABOG testing facility. In April, ABOG hosted 122 examiners and 342 candidates for the Subspecialty Certifying Exams. In addition, ABOG welcomed a total of 420 examiners and successfully administered the exam to 1,452 candidates for the Specialty Certifying Exam over four non-consecutive weeks from October through December.

“The ABOG staff works tirelessly to ensure we develop and administer fair assessments, incorporating defensible processes that are seamless for both candidates and examiners,” said Pooja Shivraj, MS, PhD, Chief of Assessments. “At the end of the day, we know that our team is responsible for the physicians we certify, and we strongly believe our 2023 Certifying Exams maximized opportunities for fairness in every capacity to support women’s healthcare.”

ABOG extends its gratitude to all examiners for their dedication, expertise, and time, and candidates for their unwavering dedication to their patients and profession by joining the elite ranks of board-certified physicians.

“We are indebted to our examiners, whose expertise and scientific rigor are essential to administering fair and valid oral examinations. We are proud of our candidates and recognize the academic milestone that board certification represents. The commitment of both examiners and candidates to evidence-based medicine reflects the drive for excellence that keeps women safe in healthcare settings across the United States and Canada,” said Barbara Hoffman, MD, Assistant Executive Director of Assessments.

Results for weeks one and two have been released to candidates, and week three and four results are tentatively scheduled for release on December 21 and January 16, respectively.

Looking ahead, ABOG is excited to host its next cycle of exams in its new testing center in April 2024 for the 2024 Subspecialty Certifying Exams. The state-of-the-art building, which will officially open in January 2024, provides increased capacity, flexibility, and functionality. This will enhance ABOG’s ability to conduct certifying exams, item writing sessions, and large meetings with greater efficiency and effectiveness.

“The new facility is a testament to the ABOG Board and previous executive directors who had the vision to build toward a new future for women’s health care. We have built an incredible center to convene, educate, and certify obstetricians and gynecologists to promote safer care for women,” said Amy Young, MD, Executive Director. “A facility of this stature is a tribute to the patients we care for and exemplifies and elevates the importance of their healthcare.”
