Information for Inactive or Retired Diplomates
Diplomates with Non-Time-Limited Certification
If you have a non-time-limited certificate and retire from active clinical practice, you need to notify ABOG of this transition. You'll then be listed as an inactive board-certified physician who will be designated as not required to meet CC requirements.
As an inactive, retired diplomate, you can request to participate in CC.
- You must pay the appropriate CC fees and complete CC Parts I, II, and III assignments each year, as appropriate for a six-year CC cycle.
- You'll be designated as participating in CC.
- In CC Year 6, you'll be required to pass the Part III CC exam or may be eligible to participate in the CC Performance Pathway (pilot) program.
If you're an inactive, retired physician who only wishes to participate in CC Part II to gain AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, please contact ABOG for approval. Participation in Part II alone will not meet the criteria for designation as meeting CC requirements.
Diplomates with Time-Limited Certification
If you're clinically inactive temporarily or take leave from your practice for medical, family, or personal reasons, you may request to participate in CC without hospital privileges or an outpatient practice.
- You'll pay the necessary CC fees, request approval for an exemption from CC Part IV, and complete CC Parts I, II, and III assignments each year.
- You must have an active medical license to practice in at least one state.
- You will be participating in CC.
- Failure to complete the yearly CC requirements during the temporary inactivity will result in expiration of certification.
- When you re-enter clinical practice, you need to notify ABOG, meet the CC eligibility requirements, and resume participating in CC Part IV.
If you have a time-limited certificate and retire from clinical practice, you need to notify ABOG of this transition.
- You'll then be listed as an inactive, retired physician.
- You'll be designated as not required to participate in CC.
- Failure to notify ABOG at retirement and/or failure to continue the CC process will result in expiration of certification.
If you're an inactive physician who re-enters practice, you must notify ABOG of that transition.
- As an inactive physician with prior time-limited certification who has not participated in CC, you'll be required to regain certification through the re-entry process.
- You'll then be eligible to re-enter the process in CC Year 1.
If you're a retired diplomate, you may request to participate in CC.
- You pay the appropriate CC fees and complete CC Parts I, II, and III assignments each year as required for a six-year CC cycle.
- You must have an active medical license to practice in at least one state.
- You'll be designated as participating in CC.
- The first year of participating in voluntary CC will be designated as CC Year 1.
- In CC Year 6, you'll be required to pass the Part III CC exam.
If you're an inactive, retired physician who wished to participate in Part II to gain AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, you need to contact ABOG for approval. Participating in Part II alone will not meet the criteria for designation as meeting CC requirements.
