Professionalism and Professional Standing Policy and Patient Transfers

April 22, 2024

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of care in women's health and promoting professional behavior among its diplomates. A key component of quality care delivery is providing the appropriate care at the right place, by the right person, at the right time. ABOG emphasizes that diplomates have a responsibility to act in the best interests of their patients and to adhere to evidence-based medicine and ABOG’s Professionalism and Professional Standing Policy. Thus, an ABOG certified physician should provide care within their scope in the appropriate setting with the appropriate resources. Provided that a diplomate has the necessary skill, privileging, and resources to render safe care, unnecessarily transferring patients to another facility would represent a breach in professional standards.

ABOG remains committed to ensuring the highest quality of care for women's health and will continue to uphold the values of professionalism, evidence-based medicine, and patient-centered care among its diplomates.
