Retirement Request Form

Retired Diplomate status is defined by ABOG as a diplomate who: A) has retired from clinical practice at a time when they were an active diplomate and, B) does not wish to maintain their board certification.

Things to consider:

  1. If a diplomate retires from clinical practice and does not want to maintain their certification, the physician must notify ABOG and submit the online form provided below to secure Retired Diplomate status. Failure to notify ABOG will result in loss of certification when the expiration date of their certificate is reached.
  2. If a diplomate designated by ABOG as having Retired Diplomate status returns to active clinical practice after time-limited certification has lapsed, he or she can only regain Active Diplomate status by successfully completing a re-entry process. If, however, he or she has been retired for six or more years, the re-entry process is not an option. In this case, Active Diplomate status can only be re-established by sitting for and passing both the Qualifying and Certifying Examinations.

For more information on Retired Status or if you'd like to consider this option further before submitting the form, please refer to the MOC Bulletin.
