Fundamental of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) is a comprehensive web-based education module that includes a hands-on skills training component and assessment tool designed to teach the physiology, fundamental knowledge, and technical skills required in basic laparoscopic surgery. The goal is to provide residents, fellows, and practicing physicians an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery in a consistent, scientifically accepted format; and to test cognitive, surgical decision-making, and technical skills, all with the goal of improving the quality of patient care.

This requirement was implemented in Academic Year 2019-2020. Candidates are required to complete the Surgical Skills Program standard through FLS or EMIGS and provide documentation to ABOG  in order for their Certifying Examination application to be approved.

Candidates will be notified if ABOG has received documentation of FLS certification on their ABOG portal and by email. If a candidate has not been notified that ABOG has received confirmation of FLS certification, they will need to upload their documentation of FLS certification in the task available on their ABOG portal or the document can be emailed to residency@abog.org.
